Reading Workshop
Reading begins with the students sitting together for a mini-lesson. A mini-lesson teaches a clearly stated, single skill that is demonstrated by the teacher. Students then turn to their reading partners and practice the strategy which supports that skill. Afterward the students read self selected just-right books from a leveled library. Meanwhile, the teacher moves about the room conferring with students individually or in groups. At the end of workshop the class regroups and shares their reading experiences.
Collaboration and choice are big parts of reading workshop. Each student is paired with a reading partner, matched by reading level. Partners often work together during the mini-lesson, mid-workshop teaching, and share portions of the workshop, providing an audience for each other others’ reading.
- Students keep reading logs in which they record the number of minutes and pages read in school and at home.
- Teachers, readers, and partnerships study the reading logs for patterns & growth and use that information to adjust their goals.
- Readers are matched to books based on a Running Record Assessment on which they've achieved 96% accuracy, fluency, and comprehension.
- Students stop to think about their reading using the skills and strategies taught in the current or previous workshops.
- Students read independently for about 30 minutes.
- Readers set goals and work toward those goals.
- Students use post-its or the reading notebook to capture their thinking as they read.
- A classroom leveled library.
- Classroom charts help support readers with fluency, decoding, and comprehension.
